Tako lako contains 111 lessons, enough to cover two semesters of a 5-credit beginner-level university course. Lessons are organized as stand-alone lessons, allowing instructors to customize the curriculum for 4-credit or 3-credit courses by omitting specific lessons. For this reason, some lessons are organized as review lessons that provide more practice in 5-credit courses. However, in 4-credit or 3-credit courses, these lessons can be optional without compromising exposure to new grammar and vocabulary. For example, most of Unit 5 revisits prior vocabulary and grammar concepts, thus providing instructors with the option to selectively focus only on new cultural lessons, such as holiday traditions.

The textbook is divided into 10 units, with the first five units (units 1-5) covered in the Fall semester and the remaining five units (units 6-10) covered in the Spring semester. This structure ensures a balanced and comprehensive learning experience throughout the academic year.
